Katatonia is a Swedish heavy metal band formed in Stockholm in 1991 by Jonas Renkse and Anders Nyström. Beginning as a death metal project, the band evolved into masters of dark melodic metal, blending elements of doom metal, gothic metal, progressive rock, and shoegaze into their signature sound. Over three decades, Katatonia has built a catalog marked by continuous artistic reinvention while maintaining their characteristic blend of dark hooks, tender vocals, and experimental instrumentation. Their recent album Nightmares as Extensions of the Waking State represents singer and founder Jonas Renkse's most personal work to date, featuring some of the band's hardest riffs in years while preserving their melodic sensibilities.
